Orson Sargado is spending seven weeks at Notre Dame as the 2017 Kroc Institute-CRS Fellow. Sargado is the Head of Office of CRS-Philippines, and serves on the Board of Trustees of the Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute.
Sargado plans to produce a working paper on resource governance in the Philippines. The research will study how to maximize gains from peace governance work by empowering local governance groups and civil society organizations to conduct responsible and just natural resource management.
Sargado will use the working paper to help CRS craft an approach for implementing similar resource governance strategies in other locations. He will discuss his research project at a public lecture on Thursday, April 6, at 12:30 in C-103 of the Hesburgh Center for International Studies.
Sargado oversees operations in Mindanao, the southern archipelago in the Philippines and the site of armed conflict between Christian, Muslim, and indigenous communities for four decades. His experience with grassroots peacebuilding includes work on community-based peacebuilding, interreligious dialogue, peace education, peace advocacy, peace governance, and emergency and peacebuilding. He is working on a doctoral degree in Development Studies at the Ateneo de Davao University.
The Kroc Institute and Catholic Relief Services have sponsored the Kroc Institute-CRS fellowships since 2006. Fellows pursue short-term research and writing projects related to peacebuilding while engaging with Kroc students and faculty. Past fellows have come from Burundi, Cameroon, El Salvador, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, the Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal and South Sudan.
