With record highs over the past two years in research funding and a University-wide commitment to growing its research programs, the University of Notre Dame is continuing to expand its research collaborations with new partners, while also considering the needs of industry.
In recent months, Notre Dame has signed several new research agreements, including:
- The creation of a renewable energy program in South Africa and Uganda delivering clean, affordable electricity to promote business and entrepreneurship in partnership with Accenture and Lenovo.
- An agreement with America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute to work with their industry membership to advance technology in additive manufacturing.
- A strategic partnership with ANSYS to engage in collaborative research activities relating to turbomachinery and general computational methods.
- Participation in the Army Research Laboratory’s Open Campus program to conduct joint research projects that are of mutual interest to the Army and Notre Dame.
- A partnership to support USAID impact evaluations in Honduras out of an activity implemented by Dexis Consulting Group.
- A research, design, and testing partnership for turbomachinery with GE’s Aviation, Oil & Gas, Power & Water, and Global Research Divisions.
- A joint seed grant program with IBM to explore new forms of computing and advanced AI research in the areas of deep learning, neuromorphic devices, and industry applications.
- A Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division (NWSC Crane) to conduct wireless electronic security research, research in hypersonic flight, and the exchange of faculty and scientists for educational workshops.
- A Center of Excellence agreement with Pratt & Whitney that will allow for the future conduct of turbomachinery research and testing services.
- A master agreement for projects that will form a foundation for future scholarly work with SAP Labs. SAP Labs are 18 R&D sites that are strategically located in hightech clusters throughout 15 countries with a mission to develop and improve SAP core products.
- An agreement with the U.S. Department of State to partner young business leaders and social entrepreneurs from Latin America and the Caribbean with South Bend companies.

Speaking about the recent growth and expansion of industry partnerships, Richard E. Billo, Associate Vice President for Research responsible for research development, said, “The University of Notre Dame is committed to creating and providing advanced technology solutions to support its ongoing commitment to research excellence.” Billo continued, “Within a short period of time, Notre Dame has seen not only its research funding, but also its collaborations with industry, grow in significant ways. Notre Dame has expanded its opportunities for collaboration with industry partners from a “one-size-fits-all,” basic research-only model, which has traditionally been used by educational institutions, to one that is progressive and flexible and includes the opportunity to conduct applied research, developmental or demonstration research, and specialized testing, in order meet the needs of the collaborating partners while still adhering to the University’s academic mission.
While Notre Dame has many long-standing industry collaborations, such as with Boeing, GE, and Honeywell, recent partnerships, such as those with Johnson & Johnson and SAP Labs, have benefited from the University’s full service R&D model.
Speaking about collaborating with the University, Don Ginnocchio, University Alliances Director for Notre Dame at SAP, said, “SAP is very pleased to build on our ongoing alliance with Notre Dame to explore how big data analytics and other technology innovations can create original and dynamic research. This joint work will support SAP’s vision to help the world run better and also to improve people’s lives.”
