The 2022 Notre Dame Student Peace Conference planning committee has announced this year’s conference theme, “(Re)Imagining Justice.”
The Notre Dame Student Peace Conference, sponsored by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, is an annual event organized by students for students. The conference is free and open to students from any college or university who want to engage in dialogue on important issues related to peacebuilding, social justice, and conflict transformation.
Due to continued uncertainty around the ongoing pandemic and in an effort to make this year’s conference accessible to a global audience, the conference will take place both in-person and virtually from April 8-9. Onsite attendance will be limited to students from the tri-campus community (University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s College and Holy Cross College).
This year’s conference theme builds upon Pope Paul VI’s exhortation, “If you want peace, work for justice.” In their theme description, this year’s planning committee wrote, “In recent years, we have witnessed an awakening of hearts and minds across the globe as people of all ages and all backgrounds speak up about the injustices they witness and increase their demands for justice. As scholars of peace studies, we must heed these calls to action and contribute to the work of creating a just, human-centered world.”
Conference organizers have published a call for proposals that invites undergraduate and graduate students from all fields of study to submit proposals exploring what justice means today in particular social contexts, setting forward visions for what a just and equitable world would look like, and asking how particular individual and community experiences contribute to peace and justice building efforts.
Proposals should demonstrate how an individual or group’s own work and scholarship advances the field of peace studies and its understanding of justice. Students can propose innovative presentations or sessions of all types including, but not limited to, research papers or posters; presentations on experiential learning; panel discussions; and artwork, performance, or media projects.
The deadline for submission is January 28. Interested students should review all submission guidelines and submit their proposal through the conference website.
