CI Compass announces the release of the Common Cloud Platform working group’s “Best Practices for Cloud Provider Analysis” report. The report, authored by CI Compass PI Ewa Deelman, CI Compass Co-PI Jarek Nabrzyski, CI Compass member Karan Vahi, and Rick Benson, of Incorporated Research Institutions of Seismology (IRIS) and (UNAVCO), is a guide of considerations to make for scientific uses of cloud platforms.
“One of the major issues for our future cloud platform is determining where it can be deployed in a cost-effective and sufficiently capable environment,” said Chad Trabant, project manager for the Cloud Computing Platform in Seismological Facilities for the Advancement of Geoscience (SAGE) and Geodetic Facility for the Advancement of Geoscience (GAGE), in the report.
The document focuses on benefits and risks that are associated with moving data and operations to the cloud. Its content includes considerations when choosing a cloud provider, cloud deployment models, cloud computing infrastructure requirements, and cloud adoption risks and mitigation strategies.
