The Center for Informatics and Computational Science (CICS) has selected three teams of Notre Dame faculty for its first round of seed grant proposals. The competitive collaborative seed award program funds interdisciplinary research teams for projects that align with CICS strategic priorities and have strong potential to attract external funding. The mission of CICS is to develop mathematical, statistical, and scientific computing techniques to address unifying challenges in the predictive modeling and design under uncertainty of complex systems in physical, chemical, and biological sciences and engineering. The recipients were chosen due to their unique potential to advance the mission of the Center.
The CICS is pleased to announce the confirmed recipients of this year’s annual seed award program:
- Lizhen Lin (Huisking Foundation, Inc. Assistant Professor, Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics), Walter Scheirer (Assistant Professor, Computer Science and Engineering), and Daniele Schiavazzi (Assistant Professor, Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics) for their proposed research entitled, “Robust and Scalable Bayesian Inference with Uncertainty Quantification.”
- Jason McLachlan (Associate Professor, Biological Sciences) and Ick Hoon Jin (Assistant Professor, Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics) for their proposed research entitled, “Incorporating Uncertainty in plant growth into Models of Coastal Sediment Accretion.”
- Ahsan Kareem (Robert M Moran Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences) and Alex Taflanidis (Associate Professor, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences and Frank M. Freimann Collegiate Chair in Structural Engineering) for their proposed research entitled, “Multi-Fidelity CFD Simulations of Wind Load Effects on Civil Infrastructure under Uncertainty.”
In discussing these awards, Dr. Nicholas Zabaras, Director of the Center said, “We are excited to see these kinds of collaborations across the colleges of Science and Engineering and look forward to advancing the interdisciplinary research of the Center”.
Future seed grant proposal calls will require collaborations with CICS members. The next call for seed projects is expected to be announced in mid-September of this year with due dates in mid-October.
