To ensure that Notre Dame International can meet the needs of the University and the goals set forward in NDI’s strategic plan, Vice President and Associate Provost for Internationalization Michael Pippenger is announcing a new leadership team:
Angie Appleby Purcell, Senior Director for Internationalization. Angie leads the strategic growth of the University’s global network in Latin America and the Middle East. She is responsible for the regions’ Global Gateways and Centers and their advancement of academic initiatives, research efforts, and institutional partnerships, and operational effectiveness. In these regions, Angie ensures alignment with the University’s Catholic mission and optimizes the integration of the University’s academy and operations. She leads the Gateways and Centers located in Jerusalem, Mexico City, Santiago, and São Paulo.
Joya Helmuth, Senior Director of Global Operations. Joya leads the full scope of NDI operations including facilities, systems and technology management, communications, operational policy and process, and travel safety. Over the past two years, she has partnered with several campus divisions to manage more strategic alignment with NDI and is the primary liaison in NDI’s work with the Office of General Counsel. Joya will also continue in the role of interim executive director of the London Global Gateway until a permanent replacement is appointed later this year.
Jonathan Noble, Senior Assistant Provost for Internationalization. Jonathan serves as the University’s regional leader for Asia and Europe and provides strategic vision for the expansion of the University’s international research profile. He advances Notre Dame’s internationalization and global research in partnership with ND Research and University Relations. As the regional leader for Asia and Europe, Jonathan is responsible for enhancing academic affairs, research strategies and programs, global educational opportunities for students, and institutional partnership with the Global Gateways and Centers located in Beijing, Dublin, Hong Kong, Kylemore, London, Mumbai, and Rome. Jonathan is also a teaching professor who created the Global Professional Experience Program curriculum for Notre Dame International and the Keough School of Global Affairs and has taught classes about contemporary China.
Beth Swift, Senior Director, Financial Operations and Administration. Beth will begin work at NDI on October 15. As a member of the Finance Division, she will manage all aspects of finance for NDI and will be responsible for supporting NDI’s business and financial operations including international banking, procurement, budget, and forecasting. Beth comes to NDI from the Office of the President where she served as principal advisor to the Vice President and Chief of Staff, managing strategic projects and providing support to the Board of Trustees and President’s Leadership and Deans’ Councils. For the preceding sixteen years, she was a member of the Finance Division in various capacities.
Hong Zhu, Senior Director of Global Education. Hong leads the Study Abroad team and provides oversight and leadership in the growth, management, and administration of the University’s undergraduate education abroad offerings, including semester and summer programs. She also continues to oversee short-term global engagement programs. In both capacities, Hong works collaboratively with the Gateways and Centers to ensure that our global education programming, both inbound and outbound, aligns with Notre Dame’s mission and NDI’s strategic plan.
Leah Zimmer, Director, International Student and Scholar Affairs. Leah continues to oversee and lead ISSA, including growth, management, and administration of immigration advising services and institutional compliance. Leah also leads strategy in the holistic engagement and incorporation of the international student and scholar community.
During the past year, NDI has created shared services arrangements with the Office of Information Technology to embed dedicated IT support, and with the Facilities Design & Operations division to manage our international facilities. In both cases, this has resulted in better support, advocacy, and more resources for NDI, and supported internationalization across campus. With Beth Swift’s appointment, NDI is moving to a similar shared service model with the Finance Division.
NDI is doing the same with the Office of Human Resources. Megan Costigan will begin on September 30 as a Senior Human Resource Consultant with NDI as her sole client. She will work from NDI’s office in 100 Main. In this role, Megan will provide guidance and support to the leadership and staff of NDI both on campus and abroad. She has developed a distinguished career in HR after graduating from Notre Dame. Megan joins us most directly from McCain Foods, which has 20,000 employees in 160 countries where she has been the Sr. Manager, HR Business Partner since 2014.
A new campus team has also been created within NDI to focus on faculty engagement. This team will come together on a regular basis to strategize, discuss, and advance initiatives that impact faculty in their teaching and scholarship. The Faculty Engagement team is comprised of the following leaders:

Geraldine Meehan, Director of Faculty Engagement. Geraldine has been increasingly engaged with faculty on campus, especially in supporting and documenting the work of our faculty on global research grants sponsored by NDI. She has also played an important role in developing new models for faculty exchange and mobility.
Jonathan Noble
Ann Tenbrunsel, Senior Assistant Provost for Internationalization and the David E. Gallo Professor of Business Ethics, Mendoza College of Business. For several years, Ann has been an invaluable advisor to NDI, providing an essential faculty perspective. She will continue to play this critical leadership role on this new team and will also remain a vital member on the University Committee on Internationalization.
Warren von Eschenbach, Associate Vice President and Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs. Warren’s responsibilities include developing new curricular opportunities for study abroad programs; developing and supporting initiatives in support of research at the Global Gateways in accordance with NDI’s strategic plan and in support of Notre Dame’s Catholic character; building new and strengthening ongoing partnerships between NDI and the academy; and increasing the visibility of opportunities for faculty members through NDI’s global network.
Over the past three years, NDI’s global team has continued to rise to the challenges of working in a complex, ever-changing environment, always for the benefit of our students and faculty. We have done so with a true commitment to the University’s vision and mission and are excited about this new chapter as we continue in the service of Notre Dame.
