During the 2021 Commencement weekend, 36 undergraduates will become the first students from the University of Notre Dame to graduate with a minor in real estate. The cohort will include students with bachelor’s degrees from 12 different departments across the College of Arts and Letters, College of Science, Mendoza College of Business, and the School of Architecture.
Led by the Fitzgerald Institute for Real Estate (FIRE) in partnership with the Department of Finance, the minor in real estate was opened to students in the fall of 2019. With the goal of delivering a real estate education through an interdisciplinary curriculum, the minor leverages various disciplines, including accounting, architecture, engineering, economics, finance, and law.
“We are proud to be able to offer this opportunity and to grow Notre Dame’s academic reputation in real estate while promoting the University’s goal to be a force for good,” said Dan Kelly, professor of law and faculty director of FIRE. “Our inaugural graduating class follows in the footsteps of many Notre Dame alumni who are leaders in the real estate industry and this cohort will serve as trailblazers for future classes of Notre Dame students in real estate.”
The minor in real estate aims to provide an educational experience that prepares students to be leaders in this field. With approximately 300 students enrolled, the minor is among the most popular available at Notre Dame and is currently almost at capacity. The curriculum includes a fundamentals course, at least nine credits in interdisciplinary real estate electives, and industry-focused colloquium courses, which provide face-to-face interaction with real estate professionals. Students also participate in career treks, competitions, and other engagements with industry to learn from and network with real estate firms.
“Nearly half of the students graduating with minors in real estate intend to pursue related careers. Their interest confirms how significant this program has become and will continue to be, especially as we grow the program’s strong alumni connections,” said Eugenio M. Acosta, director of undergraduate studies for the minor in real estate and program director of FIRE.
