Professor Thomas Juliano received DURIP funding to support the Mach-6 Quiet Tunnel facility at Notre Dame.
Three faculty members at the University of Notre Dame have received awards from the Department of Defense (DoD) for 2019. This funding will be used to acquire major research equipment that will augment current research and help develop new capabilities at the University. The DoD’s Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) supports cutting-edge research that boosts the United States’ technological expertise and STEM education.
In discussing the DURIP awards, Richard E. Billo, associate vice president for research and professor for computer science and engineering, said, “By awarding these funds to Notre Dame faculty, the Department of Defense has shown their confidence in these research programs and their potential impact on the future of technological innovation. These funds will be used to advance research at Notre Dame as well as hands-on educational opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars.”
The recipients of the DURIP awards are:
- Harindra Joseph Fernando, Wayne and Diana Murdy Professor of Engineering and Geosciences in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences with a joint appointment in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, for a W-Band Radar for cloud and fog research from the Office of Naval Research (ONR).
- Thomas Juliano, assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, for a data-acquisition system for the AFOSR–Notre Dame Large Mach-6 Quiet Tunnel and a high-speed camera from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) and the ONR, respectively.
- Nicholas Zabaras, Viola D. Hank Professor of Computational Science and Engineering in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and director of the Center for Informatics and Computational Science (CICS), for a graphics processing unit-based high-performance scientific computing cluster dedicated to artificial intelligence research from the AFOSR.
Less than 30 percent of proposals submitted for DURIP funding were awarded across the United States in 2019. In total, 185 researchers from 95 institutions received $56 million from the program.
