It’s no secret that Notre Dame is home to truly outstanding researchers and scholars. Each month, a new speaker series called Research Uncorked invites one of them to talk about his or her work not in a classroom or lecture hall but somewhere a little more unconventional:
A wine bar.
Specifically, Ironhand Vineyard’s wine bar, located along the St. Joseph River at 1025 Northside Blvd. in South Bend.
Modeled after science cafes at universities around the country, Research Uncorked was launched earlier this year by the Office of the Provost to give members of both the Notre Dame and local communities the opportunity to interact with and learn from University experts.
The events, which are always scheduled for a Tuesday at 6 p.m., can be a presentation by the speaker or an interview between the speaker and Research Uncorked host Ted Fox. Either way, the conversation is informal, with attendees welcome to ask questions at any point. There is no cost to attend, and Ironhand offers happy hour pricing throughout the event.
Upcoming speakers include Robert Schmuhl (Nov. 12), professor emeritus of American studies, who will discuss his new book on the American presidency from Franklin Roosevelt to Donald Trump, and Cara Ocobock (Dec. 10), assistant professor of anthropology, whose research program integrates human biology and anthropology to study human performance in extreme conditions.
The first Research Uncorked was held in March and featured the College of Science’s Holly Goodson on the chemistry of winemaking. Since then, Krupali Uplekar Krusche (School of Architecture), Tracy Kijewski-Correa (College of Engineering), Jessica Payne (College of Arts and Letters), Amber Selking (Mendoza College of Business, pictured above), Jennifer Tank (College of Science), and Joe Becherer (Snite Museum of Art) have all participated in the series.
Like the provost office’s With a Side of Knowledge podcast, also hosted by Fox, the Research Uncorked events were created with non-specialist audiences in mind. News about upcoming speakers is shared via the podcast’s Twitter account as well as the Ironhand website.
