Notre Dame’s John J. Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values has announced its next director. Robert Goulding, who will take over from current director Anjan Chakravartty on July 1, 2018, is an associate professor in the Program of Liberal Studies. He has been a faculty member at Notre Dame since 2003 and is a concurrent faculty member in the Department of History as well as the Reilly Center’s PhD Program in History and Philosophy of Science (directing the latter since 2017).
Goulding is an historian of Renaissance science, particularly optics and mathematics. In 2007, he co-authored a translation and commentary on the 17th-century English astronomer Thomas Harriot’s Artis analyticae praxis (Springer) and in 2010, Springer published his monograph titled Defending Hypatia: Ramus, Savile, and the Renaissance Rediscovery of Mathematical History in the series Archimedes. He has been the recipient of multiple NEH fellowships as well as a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies. During the 2016-2017 academic year, he was a resident member of Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study. He has also served as the Director of the University Seminars program from 2014-2016.
Current Reilly Center Director, and Professor of Philosophy and History and Philosophy of Science, Anjan Chakravartty has been in the position from 2014-2016 and 2017-18. His award-winning first book A Metaphysics for Scientific Realism: Knowing the Observable was published by Cambridge University Press in 2007 and most recently he published Scientific Ontology: Integrating Naturalized Metaphysics and Voluntarist Epistemology with Oxford University Press (2017). Chakravartty has been Editor in Chief of the journal Studies in History and Philosophy of Science since 2012. On July 1st he will become the new Appignani Foundation Chair at the University of Miami.
