The James A. Burns, C.S.C. Award is given annually to a faculty member for distinction in graduate teaching or another exemplary contribution to graduate education, such as building or developing a graduate program; outstanding service in teaching graduate courses; serving as an advisor or thesis director; or securing training grants (e.g. DOE, NIH, NSF) to fund graduate students. In 2016, the Burns Award recognized two professors, Catherine Zuckert of Political Science for her exemplary dedication to graduate education and mentoring, and Jeffrey Feder of Biological Sciences for his vision in conceiving of and implementing the GLOBES program. The Director of Graduate Studies Award recognizes the director of graduate studies who has had a significant impact on graduate studies in her or his program. In 2016, Jessica Collett of Sociology was recognized with this award. Collett was honored for developing new approaches to recruiting prospective students, connecting students with resources and services to foster their professional development, and helping students move effectively toward their goals. The Graduate Administrative Staff Member Award honors the graduate administrative staff member who has had a meaningful impact on graduate studies in her or his program. This impact might be in creating efficiency in the fiscal and programmatic of the graduate program from the time students are recruited to the time they graduate; proactively exploring and instituting innovative practices in service of graduate students in their department; engaging in professional development opportunities, such as learning new technologies or systems; and making the University a welcoming place for graduate students. Rebecca Overmyer of the Sociology Department was recognized with the award in 2016 for fostering a strong community for students in the program.
