The Riley Prize was established by Radwan and Allan Riley to be awarded by the Department of Art, Art History and Design in recognition of a distinguished essay in art history or art criticism written by a Notre Dame Student. The award winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000.
- Participants in the competition must be current Notre Dame undergraduate students in any discipline.
- Essays must treat topics in art history or art criticism. Only topics dealing with the visual arts are acceptable.
- Papers previously submitted in fulfillment of course requirements in the last 12 months are eligible.

Submitted papers must be sponsored by a professor. The name of the sponsor must be included in the body of the email with your submission.
- Essays should be no longer than twenty (20) typewritten pages, including notes, though longer papers will be considered with approval.
- Essays should be in standard 11 or 12-point font, double-spaced. A title page with the participant's name, Notre Dame ID number, campus address, and phone number, should be included as a separate document. All other pages of the essay should be numbered consecutively in the upper right-hand corner. The participant's name should NOT appear anywhere else in the essay.
- Notes and bibliography should follow the form indicated in the Chicago Manual of Style.
- High-quality reproductions of all works of art discussed in the paper should be included.
- All submissions must be submitted electronically to art@nd.edu by 4:00 PM, Wednesday, April 6, 2022.
- Essays will be judged on originality of thought and clarity of argument and expression. The Department of Art, Art History, and Design reserves the right to make no award if none of the submitted entries is of sufficient quality or to divide the prize if two or more entries are judged deserving.
