NDIGD awarded grant from U.S. Global Development Lab for USAID research and innovation fellowships
The Notre Dame Initiative for Global Development (NDIGD) is one of six elite university programs selected for a grant awarded by the new U.S. Global Development Lab. The $219,000 grant awarded to NDIGD, with the potential for an additional $514,000 in the second and third years, is the first co-created project awarded by the Lab. The USAID | Notre Dame Global Development Fellowships will help expand USAID’s Research and Innovation Fellowship Program. The goal for the program is to create a global network of researchers addressing today’s most pressing issues in the developing world.
As part of its commitment, the University of Notre Dame will send twelve of its best and brightest graduate students to research sites in any of seven countries: Brazil, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Senegal, and South Africa. Research sites working with USAID to offer these opportunities are locally-based organizations that have applied for graduate level researchers to assist them in growing innovative solutions for global development challenges that can make a positive impact in communities around the world.
Focus areas of research include science and engineering, physics, geosciences, computer and information science, psychology, biological and social sciences.
“The USAID | Notre Dame Global Development Fellowships provide high quality opportunities that were not available previously for Notre Dame’s graduate students to apply their expertise and conduct research on-site in the developing world. This program will open up situations where students can combine research and discovery with interest to be a force for good in the world,” says University of Notre Dame Vice President for Research Robert J. Bernhard.
The USAID | Notre Dame Global Development Fellowships will be managed through the NDIGD office, and many opportunities will exist for a multidisciplinary group of institutes, centers, and faculty to participate in the program from across campus. Graduate students can apply here beginning on October 6, 2014. The application deadline is November 30, and USAID will announce the new Fellows in early January. Fellowships lasting from two to twelve months will begin in May and June, 2015.
USAID representatives will be on campus on Tuesday, October 14, to launch the program. Faculty, staff, and all graduate students are welcome to attend this event in the McNeill Room in LaFortune Student Center from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The U.S. Global Development Lab is a new entity within the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) that seeks to increase the application of science, technology, innovation and partnerships to achieve, sustain and extend the Agency’s development impact to help hundreds of millions of people lift themselves out of extreme poverty.
