Precision medicine has become the central theme in biomedical research in 2015. Recently, a group of scientists, physicians, and engineers—leaders in various aspects of academic, corporate, and medical research—met on the campus of the University of Notre Dame to discuss the latest advances in “Precision Medicine and the Future of Healthcare: Bioanalytical and Bioengineering Solutions.”
The event, the 3rd Annual Symposium of Notre Dame’s Advanced Diagnostics & Therapeutics Initiative, afforded the participants the opportunity to explore this rapidly growing approach to diagnostics and treatments with each other, Notre Dame faculty and students, and local and regional collaborators, such as the Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend, Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, and Memorial Hospital.
Representatives from Quest Diagnostics, GE, SAP, and other companies helped place university-based discoveries in a commercial context, showing how ideas that work in a lab must also address the needs of the complex healthcare marketplace.
The symposium also highlighted some of the exciting and high-impact research being conducted by scientists and engineers in Notre Dame’s colleges and departments, as well as in vital multidisciplinary units like AD&T’s Precision Medicine program, the Harper Cancer Research Institute, Interdisciplinary Center for Network Science & Applications, W.M. Keck Center for Transgene Research, Eck Institute for Global Health, and several others.
