“How do we tell a more inclusive story that represents the broad and deep history of religion in the lands that became the United States?” said Thomas Tweed, the W. Harold and Martha Welch Endowed Chair in American Studies and professor of history at the University of Notre Dame.
Tweed has written extensively on American religious history, including six books and and a six-volume series of historical documents. He is is currently creating a comprehensive study of religion in America spanning 11,000 years, from the earliest civilizations on the North American continent to today.
“It’s really important to make sure everyone—all Americans—find some place in the larger story,” said Tweed. “I want to … think about ways in which we can increase empathy and increase tolerance so that the effect of my work, I hope, will be to make a better world.”
Tweed is a faculty fellow in the University’s Institute for Latino Studies and Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. He is also president of the American Academy of Religion for 2015 and has served as president of the American Society for the Study of Religion.
