The Fitzgerald Institute for Real Estate has teamed with the Hesburgh Libraries’ Thomas Mahaffey, Jr. Business Library to advance real estate training, education, and research at Notre Dame. In addition to working with the Fitzgerald Institute to secure proprietary real estate data that supports faculty research and industry-leading software that supports student training, the Hesburgh Libraries is now helping establish the Fitzgerald Institute’s real estate reading collection.

The Fitzgerald Institute’s inaugural reading list covers real estate topics from the financial crisis to technology, media, and telecommunications. The collection, which was compiled by a group of the institute’s advisors, includes about 40 books relevant to Notre Dame’s undergraduate, graduate, and professional students seeking internships and full-time jobs in real estate.

“We are excited to partner with the Fitzgerald Institute in support of their goals by ensuring access to the entire reading list at no cost to students,” said Pete Pietraszewski, Entrepreneurial Spirit Endowed Business Librarian. “To make this possible, our team worked to acquire a physical copy of each book — all located in the Mahaffey Business Library — and, when available, an e-book version for remote access. This is one of many ways we have supported business education at Notre Dame, and we’re committed to continuing that support in any way we can.”

Beyond the reading list, the Mahaffey Business Library helped the Fitzgerald Institute acquire important real estate databases including Moody’s Analytics Structured Finance Portal, which provides comprehensive market data on private label mortgage-backed securities. Access to large, centralized data sets from leading sources like Moody’s are critical in supporting Fitzgerald Institute faculty members and affiliates whose research, teaching, and professional interests intersect with real estate.

Supplementing classroom education with practical experience, the Fitzgerald Institute has organized financial modeling sessions for Excel as well as ARGUS — an industry-leading commercial real estate platform for asset and portfolio management. Notre Dame alumnus Peter Cogan ’17, senior associate at Walton Street Capital, taught students in the Notre Dame Real Estate Club and across the University about valuations and cash flow modelling and how various software is used within the industry.

“Employers want potential hires to have experience with ARGUS and other real estate systems and we want to make sure Notre Dame students have access to those programs,” said Eugenio Acosta, program director at the Fitzgerald Institute for Real Estate and director of undergraduate studies for the Minor in Real Estate. “Last fall, the Mahaffey Business Library was instrumental in provisioning the software and hosting the ARGUS training with Peter and we are thrilled to continue to find new ways to partner with them in order to grow the real estate program at Notre Dame.”
