The Hispanic Law Student Association of Notre Dame Law School has selected Jodie Roure, an Associate Professor and Project Investigator at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, as its recipient for the 2021 Graciela Olivárez Award.

The award is named in honor of the first woman and first Latina to graduate from Notre Dame Law School. Born in Arizona, Olivárez graduated in 1970 and went on to work in a variety of positions, including as director of the Community Services Administration under President Jimmy Carter and as chair of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund.
Every year the award goes to an outstanding Hispanic lawyer or judge who exemplifies Olivárez's ideals such as a strong commitment to community service, high ethical and moral standards, and a dedication to justice.
This years recipient, Roure, who holds a PhD in addition to a J.D., specializes in human rights, violence against women, incarceration, poverty, and racial and social justice. For more than two decades, she has worked to help hundreds of low income and underrepresented students enroll in law school and graduate school.
Roure will be presented with the award at Foley's in O'Neill Hall at 4 PM EST on Saturday, November 13, 2021. Those interested in attending the ceremony are invited to RSVP for the event.
