Notre Dame Research announces 2022 Internal Grants Awardee

Twenty-three new internal grants awards were announced today by Notre Dame Research. The grants were awarded to faculty from three Colleges and Schools in two categories: Equipment Restoration and Renewal and Library Acquisition.

“Continuing to invest in the resources that make research happen - modern spectrometers, sample preparation technology, print archives, computer equipment, and more - is vital to maintaining and growing a vibrant research enterprise,” said Patricia L. Clark, associate vice president for research and Rev. John A. Cardinal O’Hara Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “Therefore, I am grateful that Notre Dame Research can again support our researchers and scholars, improving and advancing their work, through this year’s Equipment Restoration and Renewal and Library Acquisition programs.”

The 2022 Library Acquisition winners are as follows:

  • Michel Hockx, professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and director of the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, for Foreign Office files for India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, 1947-1980. Hockx is awarded this grant with co-principal investigators (PI) Julia Kowalksi, Nikhil Menon, Mahan Mirza, and Ebrahim Moosa.
  • Timothy Matovina, professor in the Department of Theology, and Erika Hosselkus, Latin American curator in the Hesburgh Libraries, for the Gustavo Gutiérrez, O.P. Papers. 
  • Jason Ruiz, associate professor and department chair in the Department of American Studies, and co-PI Jean McManus, Catholic Studies librarian, Hesburgh Libraries, to acquire materials documenting Native American and Catholic encounters, missions, and history in the Midwest, 1830s-1920s.

The 2022 Equipment Restoration and Renewal  winners are as follows:

  • Elizabeth Archie, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, with  co-PI Melissa Berke, associate professor of biological sciences, for the addition of GCxGC capabilities to existing GC-MS for enhanced identification of unknown volatile and semivolatile gas analysis.
  • Peter Burns, Henry J. Massman Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences and director of ND Energy, for the replacement of aging Materials Characterization Facility spectrometers: Raman, FTIR, and UV-Vis. Burns is awarded this grant with co-PIs Seth Brown, Christopher Hinkle, Amy Hixon, Tengfei Luo, and Jennifer Schaefer.
  • Mayland Chang, research professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and director of the Chemistry-Biochemistry-Biology interface program, for refurbishing the AB Sciex QTrap 6500 LC/MS/MS system in the Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Facility. Chang is awarded this grant with co-PIs Brian Blagg, Jessica Brown, Matthew Champion, Ana Flores-Mireles, Laurie Littlepage, Christian Melander, Shariar Mobashery, Brittany Morgan, Anthony Serianni, and M. Sharon Stack. 
  • Sarah Chapman, senior assistant director of the Integrated Imaging Facility (IIF), along with co-PI Bradley Smith, Emil T. Hofman Professor of Science in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and director of the IIF, for the renewal of multi-user histological sample preparation equipment within the Notre Dame Integrated Imaging Facility.
  • Manoel Couder, associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, for the replacement of vital laboratory control equipment to meet modern cyberinfrastructure standards and maintain continued reliable operations of the Notre Dame Nuclear Science Laboratory. Couder is awarded this grant with co-PIs Tan Ahn, Ani Aprahamian, Daniel Bardayan, Georg Berg, Maxime Brodeur, Phillippe Collon, Richard deBoer, Umesh Garg, Joachim Gorres, Khachatur Manukyan, Patrick O’Malley, Daniel Robertson, Anna Simon-Robertson, Edward Stech, Wanpeng Tan, and Michael Wiescher. 
  • László Forró, Aurora and Thomas Marquez Professor of Physics of Complex Quantum Matter in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, for a superconducting thin-film deposition system for quantum science and technology. Forró is awarded this grant with co-PIs Badih Assaf, David Burghoff, Morten Eskildsen, Patrick Fay, Dafei Jin, and Xiaolong Liu.

  • Jonathan Hauenstein, professor and department chair in the Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics, for renewing in-silico labs to enable and enhance  computationally based simulation and analysis. 
  • Eric Lease Morgan, digital initiatives librarian in the Hesburgh Libraries’ Navari Family Center for Digital Scholarship, for text mining and natural language processing at the University of Notre Dame.
  • Nosang Myung, Bernard-Keating Crawford Professor of Engineering in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and director of the Analytical Sciences and Engineering Core Facility, to upgrade MFP3d with advanced AFM capabilities for materials and biological research. Myung is awarded this grant with co-PIs Meenal Datta, Albert Cerrone Melchor, Prakash Nallathamby, and Svetlana Neretina.
  • Glen Niebur, professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering and director of the bioengineering graduate program, for an X-Ray source for micro-computed tomography system. Niebur is awarded this grant with co-PIs Laurie Littlepage, Matthew Ravosa, and Ryan Roeder.
  • Joseph O’Tousa, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, for updating live cell imaging capabilities in the Notre Dame Integrated Imaging Facility. O’Tousa is awarded this grant with co-PIs Sara Cole, Ana Flores-Mireles, Jason Rohr, Felipe H. Santiago-Tirado, Bradley Smith, Kevin T. Vaughan, and Matthew J. Webber.
  • Graham Peaslee, professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, for the replacement of vacuum technology and detectors for the nuclear applications program at Notre Dame. Peaslee is awarded this grant with co-PIs Kyle Doudrick, Gary Lamberti, and Jay LaVerne.
  • Michael Pfrender, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, and director of the Genomics and Bioinformatics Core Facility, for the renewal of the Notre Dame ThermoFisher sequencing platform. Pfrender is awarded this grant with co-PIs Francis J. Castellino, Michael Ferdig, and Neil Lobo. 
  • David Richter, associate professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences, for a high-performance computing platform for enabling environmental modeling and simulation.
  • James Rudolph, assistant professor of industrial design in the Department of Art, Art History, and Design, for advancing the cross-disciplinary user experience lab: equipment restoration and renewal for faculty and graduate level research in the Design Department. Rudolph is awarded this grant with co-PIs Clinton Carlson and Masters of Fine Arts student Nik Swift.
  • William F. Schneider, Dorini Family Chair in Energy Studies and chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, for the renewal of the Computational Molecular Science and Engineering Laboratory high performance compute cluster. Schneider is awarded this grant with co-PIs Yamil Colon, Steven Corcelli, Alexander Dowling, T. Daniel Gezelter, Hanyu Ma, Edward J. Maginn, Jonathan Whitmer, and Yong Zhang. 
  • Alan Seabaugh, Frank M. Freimann Professor of Electrical Engineering and director of Notre Dame Nanoscience and Technology (NDnano), along with co-PI Patrick Fay, professor of electrical engineering and director of the Notre Dame Nanofabrication Facility, for the Notre Dame Nanofabrication Facility core tools renewal.
  • Joshua D. Shrout, professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences, for the replacement and upgrade for bacterial and microbiome behavior imaging. Shrout is awarded this grant with co-PIs Paul W. Bohn, Diogo Bolster, Jeremy B. Fein, Anthony Hoffman, Shaun W. Lee, Robert Nerenberg, and Abigail A. Weaver. 
  • Nathan G. Swenson, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Gillen Director of the University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center (UNDERC), with co-PI Stuart Jones, professor of biological sciences, for the replacement of the gas chromatograph at UNDERC.
  • Douglas Thain, professor and associate department chair in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, for renewing the Data Intensive Science Cluster (DISC) Thain is awarded this grant with co-PIs Paul Brenner, Patrick Flynn, and Kevin Lannon.
