Interested in how citizen science, laboratory experimentation, investigative reporting and social media helped a team of Virginia Tech researchers uncover lead-contaminated water in Flint, Michigan?
Dr. Kelsey Pieper, postdoctoral researcher, and Siddhartha Roy, doctoral student, both members of Virginia Tech’s nationally renowned Flint research team will visit campus this weekend (Nov. 18-19). Two public events during the Notre Dame vs. Virginia Tech football festivities will offer an inside look at the science and developments behind the Flint water crisis:
FLINT: WATER, SCIENCE & THE PUBLIC GOOD
Friday, November 18 | 12:45-2 p.m. | 283 Galvin Auditorium
Join us for a panel discussion with Virginia Tech’s Dr. Kelsey Pieper and Siddhartha Roy, along with private sector leaders Kevin Klau (’96), President of Hach Company, and David Henderson, Founder of XPV Water, whose businesses promote science discovery. The event will be moderated by Dr. Jennifer Tank, Director of the Notre Dame Environmental Change Initiative, who received her Master’s and Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.

FROM THE FRONTLINES OF FLINT
Saturday, November 19 | 11-12 p.m. | 101 Jordan Hall of Science
ND-ECI and College of Science host a presentation by Virginia Tech researchers, who will share their story about how the Flint water crisis unfolded, and the scientific and ethical challenges that it brought to light.
Help Notre Dame Fight for Flint: ND-ECI will be collecting donations for Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties, which supplies food banks with fresh fruit and vegetables to helps those afflicted, especially children, combat the effects of lead contamination. Notre Dame Research water bottles will also be distributed at the events!
