With a Side of Knowledge is a podcast produced by the Office of the Provost at the University of Notre Dame. It brings listeners informal interviews with fascinating scholars and professionals from both Notre Dame and elsewhere that take place over brunch.

The 16th episode of the show’s third season, “On the Smithsonian and Sneaking in the Sidedoor,” was released Thursday, April 2, and features Lizzie Peabody and Justin O’Neill, the host and producer, respectively, of Sidedoor, a podcast from the Smithsonian Institution.

This particular episode was recorded not over brunch but via the online meeting platform Zoom, with Peabody and O’Neill joining host Ted Fox from Washington, D.C., to discuss their show and all that goes into making it. The conversation started with where the name “Sidedoor” came from and a look inside one of the podcast’s most popular episodes, titled “The Worst Video Game Ever?”

They also covered the time Peabody and O’Neill took listeners on a field trip—a great reminder that when we say “the Smithsonian,” we’re not just talking about one museum—as well as the surprising history of the spacesuits that put a man on the moon and other topics that will be coming up in Sidedoor’s new season.
