Some funding agencies provide opportunities aimed at supporting equipment and instrumentation needs. 

This page provides a brief overview of some of the opportunities available to support equipment and instrumentation. Please review the eligibility requirements for each opportunity, as application deadlines and requirements may vary.

Department of Defense (DoD) - Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP)

The DURIP is designed to improve the capabilities of U.S. institutions of higher education to conduct research and to educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense, by providing funds for the acquisition of research equipment. This award provides support to purchase instrumentation in support of research in areas of interest to the DoD, including areas of research supported by the Army Research Office, the Office of Naval Research, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.


Department of Energy (DOE) - Laboratory Equipment Donation Program (LEDP)

The LEDP program grants surplus and available used energy-related laboratory equipment to universities and colleges in the United States for use in energy oriented educational programs. The listing of equipment available is posted on the website and is updated as new equipment is identified. It is available at no cost for a limited time and is granted on the first-received qualified application basis. Specific items may be recalled for DOE use and become unavailable through the program after the equipment appears on the availability list.


Department of Energy (DOE) Nuclear Energy University Programs - Scientific Infrastructure Support for Consolidated Innovative Nuclear Research

Under the General Scientific Infrastructure Support for Universities section of this FOA, applications can be submitted for equipment, software, instrumentation, and associated non-reactor upgrade requests that support nuclear energy-related R&D or education. Funding requests can include, but are not limited to, equipment and instrumentation for specialized facilities, classrooms and teaching laboratories (for universities only), and nonreactor NS&E research. Infrastructure requests that support the sharing and use of equipment and instrumentation by multiple campuses of a university, multiple universities, or national laboratories are encouraged. Universities are permitted to submit one single application to this FOA area per institution.


Micromeritrics Instrument Corporation - Instrument Grant Program

The Instrument Grant Program provides materials characterization instruments to non-profit universities and research organizations for the purpose of fostering and supporting meritorious research projects. Types of instrumentation that qualify as Donated Equipment include particle size analyzers, gas adsorption analyzers, mercury porosimeters, gas pycnometers, and chemisorption instrumentation.


National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) ROSES - Planetary Major Equipment and Facilities

This program allows proposals for new or upgraded nonflight analytical, computational, telescopic, and other instrumentation required by investigations sponsored by the Planetary Science Research Program’s science research programs. A Planetary Major Equipment (PME) proposal may be submitted in one of two ways: (1) as a special section that is appended to an eligible Planetary Science research program; or (2) as a stand-alone equipment proposal submitted to an eligible Planetary Science research program.

 


National Institutes of Health (NIH) - Biomedical Research Facilities

This program allows proposals for support to modernize existing or construct new biomedical research facilities. The goal of this FOA is to upgrade or create novel biomedical research infrastructure to strengthen biomedical research programs. The proposed project must serve the applicant-defined institution-wide biomedical research needs. Each project is expected to provide long-term improvements to the institutional research infrastructure. Targeted are the modernization of core facilities and the development of other infrastructure serving an institution-wide research community on a shared basis. The maximum award budget is $8,000,000. Applications with budget less than $3,000,000 will not be considered. The number of awards is contingent upon NIH appropriations and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications


National Institutes of Health (NIH) - High End Instrumentation (HEI) Grant

The High-End Instrumentation Grant program encourages applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase a single major item of equipment to be used for biomedical research that costs at least $600,001. Instruments in this category include, but are not limited to, x-ray diffraction systems, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometers, DNA and protein sequencers, biosensors, electron and confocal microscopes, cell-sorters, and biomedical imagers.


National Institutes of Health (NIH) - Shared Instrumentation Grant Program

The objective of the Shared Instrumentation Grant Program is to make available to institutions expensive research instruments that can only be justified on a shared-use basis and that are needed for NIH-supported projects in basic, translational or clinical areas of biomedical/behavioral research. The Program provides funds to purchase or upgrade a single item of expensive, specialized, commercially available instrument or an integrated instrumentation system. 


National Institutes of Health (NIH) - Shared Instrumentation for Animal Research Grant Program

This Shared Instrumentation for Animal Research Grant Program encourages applications from groups of NIH-funded investigators to purchase or upgrade scientific instruments necessary to carry out animal experiments in all areas of biomedical research supported by the NIH. Applicants may request clusters of commercially available instruments configured as specialized integrated systems or as series of instruments to support a thematic well-defined area of research using animals or related materials. 


National Science Foundation (NSF) - Earth Sciences, Instrumentation and Facilities (EAR/IF)

The Instrumentation and Facilities Program in the Division of Earth Sciences (EAR/IF) supports meritorious requests for infrastructure that promotes research and education in areas supported by the Division. EAR/IF considers proposals for the acquisition or upgrade of research equipment that advances laboratory and field investigations, and student research training opportunities in the Earth sciences.


National Science Foundation (NSF) - Instrument Capacity for Biological Research

Supports projects that specifically enable increased access to state-of-the-art instrumentation in support of the biological sciences. The program supports activities that enhance access to and dissemination of innovative instrumentation, and promote and enable access to existing instrumentation facilities (ie. imaging, genomics, proteomics, etc.) at the regional or national level.


National Science Foundation (NSF) - Major Research Instrumentation (MRI)

The MRI Program serves to increase access to shared instrumentation for scientific and engineering research and research training. This program especially seeks to improve the quality and expand the scope of research and research training in science and engineering by supporting proposals for shared instrumentation that fosters the integration of research and education in research-intensive learning environments. 


National Science Foundation (NSF) - Mid-scale Research Infrastructure-1 (Mid-scale RI-1)

Within Mid-scale RI-1, proposers may submit two types of projects, “Implementation” and “Design”. Design and Implementation projects may comprise any combination of equipment, infrastructure, computational hardware and software, and necessary commissioning. Design includes planning (preliminary and final design) of research infrastructure with an anticipated total project cost that is appropriate for future Mid-scale RI-1, Mid-scale RI-2 or MREFC-class investments. Mid-scale RI-1 uses an inclusive definition of implementation, which can include traditional stand-alone construction or acquisition and can include a degree of advanced development leading immediately to final system acquisition and/or construction. Implementation projects may support new or upgraded research infrastructure. 


National Science Foundation (NSF) - Mid-scale Research Infrastructure-2 (Mid-scale RI-2)

The NSF Mid-scale RI-2 program supports implementation of projects that comprise any combination of equipment, instrumentation, computational hardware and software, and the necessary commissioning and human capital in support of implementation of the same. Mid-scale RI-2 projects directly enable advances in any of the research domains supported by NSF, including STEM education. Mid-scale RI-2 also support projects in high states of readiness for implementation, i.e., those that have already matured through previous developmental investments. Projects may also include upgrades to existing research infrastructure.


National Science Foundation (NSF) - National Facilities

The National Facilities program supports the operation of national user facilities: National Facilities are research facilities with specialized instrumentation available to the scientific research community in general and the materials research community in particular. These facilities provide unique research capabilities that can be located at only a few highly specialized laboratories in the Nation. They provide open user service for scientists and engineers from a broad range of disciplines including biology, chemistry, geosciences, materials research, and physics.


National Science Foundation (NSF) - Oceanographic Facilities and Equipment Support

Oceanographic facilities and equipment awards are made for the procurement, conversion and/or up-grade, enhancement or annual operation of platforms in the ocean, coastal, near-shore and Great Lakes. Awards are generally directed specifically to support facilities that lend themselves to shared use within the broad range of federally-supported research and education programs. Individual project-based facilities and instrumentation, limited to one or a small group of investigators, should be supported through appropriate research programs, including: Ship Operations, Oceanographic Technical Services, Oceanographic Instrumentation, Shipboard Scientific Support Equipment, Ship Acquisition and Upgrade, and Other Facility Activities.


Fund for Astrophysical Research - Theodore Dunham, Jr. Grants for Research in Astronomy

Theodore Dunham, Jr. Grants support research in astronomy and are awarded for the acquisition of astronomical equipment, computer time, computer hardware or software that will be used in research.
