Philip Coyne

Biography

Dr. Coyne is a 1976 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, majoring in biology. Following graduation, he was selected as a Peace Corps volunteer, and served two years as a Tilapia nilotica fisheries advisor in the Central African Republic. Following this, he obtained a masters of science in public health (MSPH) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, concentrating in parasitology. In 1981, he matriculated as a medical student at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), where he was commissioned as an officer in the US Public Health Service (PHS). Following residency and fellowship training in Infectious Diseases at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, he began his PHS career as a medical officer at the US Food and Drug Administration, responsible for all antimalarial and antiparasitic drugs. Subsequently he had PHS assignments as a consultant to the Riverblindness Program at the World Bank; as the director of regulatory affairs at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Division of Experimental Therapeutics; and as a program officer in the Parasitology and

International Programs branch of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Prior to his retirement from the PHS in 2014, he spent six years as an Associate Professor of Tropical Public Health at USUHS.

Following retirement, Dr. Coyne works in the Prequalification of Medicines Programme at the World Health Organization. He has also been teaching at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on matters relating to the global health impact of substandard and falsified medicines, and he is an affiliated practitioner with the Eck Institute for Global Health at the University of Notre Dame.
