The seminar is entitled, "Using Web Archives to Document Social Movements and Disinformation - Practice, Ethics, and Challenges" and will be hosted in B001 Geddes Hall, Andrews Auditorium.

Abstract:
Web archives are becoming increasingly important for researchers and journalists wanting to preserve and study current events, including evidence of disinformation. However, there have been ethical concerns raised about archiving materials that might later be used to cause harm, such as first-hand accounts of protests or social media posts from non-public figures. In addition, social media platforms and other dynamic websites can be difficult to archive faithfully due to their heavy use of JavaScript and client-side rendering. In this talk, I will provide an overview of web archiving and discuss potential ethical concerns and technical challenges, highlighting research from the Web Science and Digital Libraries (WS-DL) group at Old Dominion University.
