Victor Zavala 1
The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering welcomes Victor Zavala, Baldovin-DaPra Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, for the Fall 2023 Thiele Lecture Series. Details of his talk will be available soon. Prior to the seminar, you are welcome to join the CBEGSO for a reception with light refreshments at 11:00 a.m. in Hesburgh Library Scholars Lounge to meet the speaker.
Biography

Victor M. Zavala is the Baldovin-DaPra Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a senior computational mathematician in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory. He holds a B.Sc. degree from Universidad Iberoamericana and a Ph.D. degree from Carnegie Mellon University, both in chemical engineering. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Process Control, Mathematical Programming Computation, and Computers & Chemical engineering. He is a recipient of NSF and DOE Early Career awards and of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). His research interests include statistics, control, and optimization and applications to energy and environmental systems.

The Zavala research group uses mathematics and computation to tackle diverse problems arising in optimization, control, data science, and energy/environmental systems. Specific applications include waste management and recycling (e.g., plastic and organic waste), sensor design (e.g., air and water contaminants), biological systems (e.g., microbial communities and bioproduction), and optimization of energy infrastructures (e.g., electrochemical systems). We work closely with experts from diverse computational and experimental fields.
