Peace Con

The 2019 Notre Dame Student Peace Conference Committee announces this year’s conference theme, “Expanding Circles: Peace in a Polarized Age?” The conference will take place March 29-30, 2019.

In their description of the theme, conference co-chairs Monica Montgomery (‘19) and Maddie Thompson (‘19) write, “In our world today, we see an increase in displaced peoples, rising global powers, mass shootings, political divisiveness, and organized protests. Comprehensive approaches to strategic peacebuilding require that we first ask questions surrounding decision-making, access, power, and violence; evaluate these current structures; and brainstorm creative pathways forward…What do inclusive approaches to peacebuilding look like in today’s divided social, political, and international systems?”

To explore this question, conference organizers are opening a call for proposals and inviting undergraduate and graduate students to demonstrate how their work contributes to an inclusive peacebuilding approach. Proposals can suggest presentations of all types, including research papers or posters; reflections on experiential learning; panel discussions; roundtables exploring current issues; workshops or trainings; and artwork, performance or media projects.

The committee welcomes proposals that engage with, but are not limited to, topics such as: migration and refugees; political polarization; nuclear disarmament;

restorative justice; nonviolent resistance; gender equality; environmental justice; sustainable development; gun violence; nationalism; religious perspectives; and globalization.

Interested students should submit an abstract of their proposed presentation via a submission form on the Student Peace Conference website.

Proposals must be submitted by January 21, 2019, and proposals submitted earlier may be given preference in the review process.
