Angie Appley Purcell has joined the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study (NDIAS) as its managing director. As managing director, Appleby Purcell will work to develop and implement the NDIAS’s strategic plan; oversee the administrative, operational, and financial components of the Institute; and manage its staff. She will also support the NDIAS’s robust programming and serve as an ambassador for the institute to campus and external partners.
Appleby Purcell takes over the post from Maria Di Pasquale, who was recently appointed Senior Advisor in the Office of the Provost at Notre Dame.
“I am so grateful that Angie is willing to serve in this critical leadership role for the Institute,” said Meghan Sullivan, director of the NDIAS and the Wilsey Family College Professor of Philosophy. "Angie joins us in an exciting and busy season of growth for our research fellowship program, and we are so fortunate to have her tremendous experience building programs for Notre Dame and her invaluable wisdom as a manager.”
Before joining the NDIAS, Appleby Purcell was Senior Director for Internationalization at Notre Dame International (NDI). She oversaw NDI’s global locations in Jerusalem, Mexico, Chile, and Brazil, where she advanced and expanded global education and faculty research opportunities. A member of the division’s leadership team, Angie assisted the vice president and associate provost in the development of the division’s five-year strategic plan and implementation. She also served as the interim executive director of the Jerusalem Global Gateway.
In addition, Appleby Purcell participated in the Notre Dame’s Leadership Rotation Program and served as the Director of Spirituality for the Notre Dame Alumni Association. She initially returned to the University in 2007 where, on behalf of the Department of Theology, she designed and directed an international service-learning course and internship program for graduate students.

Appleby Purcell holds a B.A. in psychology and religious studies from Saint Mary’s College and a master of divinity from Notre Dame. Prior to Notre Dame, she worked at Catholic Theological Union and Georgetown University.
