The Institute for Ethics and the Common Good (ECG) welcomes Carlos Lozada '93 as Visiting Professor of the Practice for Public Discourse. An opinion columnist for The New York Times and recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2019, Lozada will advise ECG on strategies to help researchers and students engage the public, especially through high-impact newspapers, periodicals, books, and podcasts.
"Carlos has pioneered methods for taking complex ideas—especially spread across books and print media—and helping the public appreciate new and important stories buried in the noise. His work for The Washington Post and The New York Times has helped the public tap into fresh ways to engage political and ethical issues, with humor and insight that transcends partisanship and encourages all of us to look deeper. We could not imagine a better inaugural Professor of the Practice for Public Engagement, and we are thrilled for the ways our students, faculty, and leaders will learn from him to grow their own public voices."
In 2022, Lozada joined The New York Times as an opinion columnist after 17 years with The Washington Post, where he worked as senior editor and book critic. He has overseen news coverage of economics and national security, and worked as managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine. In addition to his 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism, Lozada has received the 2015 Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing from the National Book Critics Circle and was a Knight-Bagehot fellow in economics and business journalism at Columbia University.
A 1993 graduate of Notre Dame, Lozada also holds an M.A. in public administration from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University.
During his time with ECG as Visiting Professor of the Practice for Public Discourse, Lozada will serve as an ex officio member of the Institute's faculty board, visit and present work as part of the regular Fellows seminar series, serve as a mentor to ECG's faculty and doctoral students as they build public engagement strategies for their work, and connect with members of the campus community and beyond.
Lozada was Practitioner in Residence at Institute in 2022-2023, during which time he visited classes, took part in faculty seminars, and served as a panelist for “The Meaning of the Midterms.”

The Institute for Ethics and the Common Good (ECG), formerly known as the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study, facilitates interdisciplinary research in foundational and applied ethics, coordinates projects that cross departments and units, and supports ethics-related education and public engagement efforts.
