The Fitzgerald Institute for Real Estate (FIRE) is focused on being a thought leader and conducting world-class research across multiple disciplines on the world’s largest asset class, real estate. To this end, FIRE is pleased to welcome three Senior Research Fellows, each of whom is generating influential scholarship on issues within real estate, from commercial real estate and macroeconomics to urban economics and housing.
Stijn G. Van Nieuwerburgh is the Earle W. Kazis and Benjamin Schore Professor of Real Estate and Professor of Finance at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business. Van Nieuwerburgh’s research, which has been published in the top finance and economics journals, explores issues at the intersection of housing, asset pricing, and macroeconomics, as well as commercial real estate price formation and mortgage market design.
Edward L. Glaeser, the Fred and Eleanor Glimp Professor of Economics and Chairman of the Department of Economics at Harvard University, is perhaps the nation’s leading urban economist. Glaeser’s work, which focuses on the determinants of city growth and the role of cities as centers of idea transmission, includes books on Cities, Agglomeration, and Spatial Equilibrium (2008), Rethinking Federal Housing Policy (2008), Triumph of the City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier, and Happier (2011), and Survival of the City: Mass Flourishing in an Age of Social Isolation (2021).
Robert C. Ellickson, the Walter E. Meyer Professor Emeritus of Property and Urban Law at Yale Law School, is a quintessential interdisciplinarian. For more than five decades, Ellickson’s pathbreaking scholarship has incorporated insights from transaction cost economics, sociological theory, and legal analysis to study questions on land use and housing policy, homelessness, community associations, neighborhoods, and cities.
Professor Dan Kelly, FIRE’s Faculty Director, states: “Stijn Van Niewerburgh, Ed Glaeser, and Bob Ellickson are world-class scholars. Their research is of the highest caliber.” Kelly adds: “FIRE is honored that all three of these scholars have agreed to be Senior Research Fellows at the Institute, serving as an external academic advisory committee for FIRE and providing strategic direction on research.”
Notre Dame has close ties with all three scholars.
At Kelly’s invitation, Glaeser and Ellickson delivered keynote addresses at the 2010 Notre Dame symposium on “Housing: Law & Policy,” hosted by the Law & Economics Program. William Evans, the Keough-Hesburgh Professor of Economics, co-founder of the Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities, and recipient of Notre Dame’s 2023 Research Achievement Award, provided a response to Glaeser’s keynote. Nicole Stelle Garnett, Associate Dean for External Engagement and John P. Murphy Foundation Professor of Law, provided a response to Ellickson’s keynote. Evans and Garnett currently serve as FIRE Faculty Fellows.
Similarly, Martijn Cremers, the Martin J. Gillen Dean and Bernard J. Hank Professor of Finance at Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, speaks very highly of Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh’s research and teaching: “We are honored that Professor Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh has joined FIRE as a Senior Research Fellow. He is a leading scholar in real estate finance, with an incredibly impressive track record of research publications, teaching, and mentorship of junior scholars. His expertise in real estate finance, commercial real estate, and asset pricing will contribute significantly to FIRE’s research focus.”
There is more to come. According to Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C., Vice President and Associate Provost for Interdisciplinary Initiatives, “FIRE is advancing interdisciplinary research on important local, national, and global issues related to real estate. These three Senior Research Fellows will only help to advance FIRE’s emerging research priorities.”
