Three students pursuing the doctorate in materials science and engineering (MSE) at Notre Dame were the featured speakers at the program’s first two community-building events of the spring semester. Angela Abarca and Hanfeng Zhang were presenters at the January meeting, while Bingxin Yang presented at the February meeting. The February meeting also featured activities to help the students network and get to know each other better.
The student presenters and their areas of research are:
Angela Abarca Perez is a graduate student in professor Kyle Doudrick’s group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences. Her presentation was entitled “Rational design of catalytic polymeric membranes for treating nitrate in drinking water.” Angela is co-advised by Professor William Phillip in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. “Machine learning-assisted exploration of thermally conductive polymers based on high-throughput molecular dynamics simulations” was presented by Hanfeng Zhang. He is advised by Tengfei Luo, Dorini Family Professor in the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department. Hanfeng is co-advised by professor Ed Maginn in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and professor Brandon Ashfeld in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Abstract.
Bingxin Yang, a graduate student in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, presented his research on "Nanoengineered gas sensing materials for electronic nose (E-nose) application." Bingxin is advised by Nosang Myung, Bernard Keating-Crawford Professor of Engineering in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and co-advised by Yanliang Zhang, associate professor in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering.
