MSE fellowships support four interdisciplinary graduate research projects

The University of Notre Dame’s Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) fellowship program will support four graduate students – two in the College of Science and two from the College of Engineering – during the 2023-2024 academic year.

All fellowship proposals are evaluated by the program’s Executive Committee. The committee selects proposals to initiate interdisciplinary materials research that will result in grant proposals with a significant prospect of external funding.

Each student receives guidance from an interdisciplinary mentor who collaborates with the primary advisor and provides expertise and/or resources that enhance the interdisciplinary nature of the MSE research. The mentor also writes collaborative proposals with the primary advisor and serves on the student’s candidacy and dissertation committees.

The MSE projects and fellows for 2023-2024 are:

Project: Photoswitchable ionic liquids: Light mediated directional solvent extraction
  • Student: Greg Durling, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
  • Advisor: Brandon Ashfeld, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
  • Interdisciplinary Mentor: Tengfei Luo, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering
Project: Isolation of catalytically relevant sites in 2D extended solids through atom-transfer/exchange reactions
  • Student: Joshua Morales Campos, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
  • Advisor: Professor Adam Jaffe, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
  • Interdisciplinary Mentor: Jason Hicks, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
Project: Controlling oxidation during nanomaterial synthesis using plasma electrolysis
  • Student: Chiedozie Ogueri, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering
  • Advisor: David Go, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering
  • Interdisciplinary Mentor: David Bartels, Notre Dame Radiation Laboratory
Project: Nanoscale characterization and control of strain and defects in two-dimensional materials for optimized quantum emitters
  • Student: Yucheng Yang, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering
  • Advisor: Matthew Rosenberger, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering
  • Interdisciplinary Mentor: Anthony Hoffman, Department of Electrical Engineering
To date, MSE fellowships have supported 14 materials-focused PhD student projects.

Notre Dame’s MSE doctoral program is a distinctive, interdisciplinary program representing seven departments and programs in the Colleges of Engineering and Science. Established in 2020, the program now includes more than 40 students and has six graduates.
