One of the goals of Notre Dame’s new interdisciplinary Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) PhD program is to build community among the students and faculty engaged in materials-focused research across campus. The Fall MSE Luncheon held in September provided such an opportunity. Alan Seabaugh, professor of electrical engineering and chair of the MSE executive committee, spoke briefly about the history of materials research at Notre Dame, the motivation for launching the new program, which started in 2020, and the importance of collaborating across disciplines. He also opened the floor for anyone to voice a current need they had in their research that perhaps someone there could help with.

Faculty and students from each of the seven participating departments and programs attended the September event. Students in the program meet regularly throughout the year to discuss their research and build connections. At this year’s meetings, students will also share their expertise in other areas (research-related apps and software, time management, lab equipment, etc.). Graduate students who would like to learn more about the program are invited to attend upcoming events.
