The Center for Sustainable Energy (ND Energy) at the University of Notre Dame acknowledges the outstanding academic achievements of the high school students participating in the Notre Dame-Mishawaka High School Research Internship Program and graduating this year from Mishawaka High School.
“Never before have we had this many students from the research internship program achieving the highest academic honor upon graduation and being named valedictorian or salutatorian,” stated Ginger E. Sigmon, managing director of ND Energy and internship program advisor. “We are extremely proud of all students in the program and especially grateful for the opportunity to play a role in their high school education and future endeavors.”

Other students graduating this year who have participated in the research internship program are F. Christian Chavez, attending West Liberty University to study Exercise Physiology, and Ana DeVries will be going on to study Psychology.
Now in its eleventh year, the research internship program has welcomed 72 students from Mishawaka High School who have successfully completed the program. These students conducted research with Notre Dame faculty and gained a deeper understanding of specific research topics while performing research in a university laboratory.
Additionally, the internship provided students with a preview of college life and encouraged them to continue their education beyond high school.
“We are proud to say that all 72 students in the internship program have graduated from high school and gone on to some level of undergraduate studies,” said Sigmon. “This is how we know the program is working!”
These students have received degrees in engineering, biology/medicine, pharmacy, and computer science from institutions such as Purdue University, Indiana University, Bloomington and South Bend, and the University of Indianapolis, to name a few.
At the end of the internship, students present a research poster to demonstrate their knowledge and experiences in the laboratory for their friends, family, Mishawaka High School officials, and Notre Dame faculty and mentors.
The poster session this year is Thursday, May 18, 2023, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Atrium of Stinson-Remick Hall of Engineering. This event is free and open to anyone who is interested in learning more about research at Notre Dame.
