A collaborative team at Notre Dame and the University of Michigan (Sue Anne Bell and Matthew A. Davis) has published a new research letter in JAMA Network Open. We found increased mortality risk among older adults living with Alzheimer disease and related dementia (ADRD) after hurricane exposure. Mortality risk was highest in the 3-6 month period after a storm, implicating factors beyond immediate storm-related damage. This work underscores the importance of anticipating and responding to the needs of the ADRD population during disasters, particularly as disasters increase due to climate change.
