What is the American studies major like at Notre Dame?

“American studies is analyzing the structures of power within American society through critical lenses like race, class, gender, and religion,” said American studies major Jacob McKenna.

In American studies, you’ll take classes like:

  • American Wilderness
  • Sports and American Culture
  • Immigrant America
  • History of American Capitalism
  • Indigenous Peoples
  • Laboring Women
  • American Conspiracies
  • Clothes Make the Man

American studies majors pursue their passions while developing skills such as oral and written communication, teamwork, analytical reasoning, and ethical judgment.

After graduation, students go on to top graduate and professional schools and work in a variety of professions and industries. First jobs include:

  • Intelligence analyst, FBI
  • Business management associate, General Mills
  • Project manager, Epic Systems
  • Account coordinator, News America Marketing
  • Associate Consultant, PwC

“American studies has been a lot of challenging what I have always believed and using that to move towards social justice,” said American studies major Emily Okawara. “With that mindset and those skills, you can go anywhere and do anything.”
