Excellence in Mentorship Workshop
Research Engagement hosts an annual Excellence in Mentorship Workshop in partnership with Notre Dame's Department of Biological Sciences and the Harper Cancer Research Institute. During the three-hour workshop, graduate students and faculty members prepare to host a variety of audiences — high school students, undergraduate students, high school teachers — in their research labs. The workshop focuses on ways to meaningfully engage mentees in the research process.
Participants share personal experiences with mentoring and hear from a panel of individuals who have been mentored during a research experience. They also practice communicating their research to their different mentee audiences and discuss best practices and responsibilities for mentoring. The workshop covers guidelines for working with minors and non-ND participants. Attendees leave with a packet of resources to support their mentoring this summer and beyond.
The Excellence in Mentorship Workshop is one of the existing ways Research Engagement contributes to infrastructure for continued professional development to support the research efforts of faculty, graduate, and postdoctoral students.
