Emil Cherrington

Biography

Emil Cherrington is an incoming Research Professor at the University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center (UNDERC). Emil completed his undergraduate degree in biology at Loyola University Maryland in 2001 and, in 2004, he completed a master’s degree in forest resources at the University of Washington, where he was an Organization of American States Fellow from 2002-2004. In 2016, under the sponsorship of a European Commission Erasmus Mundus fellowship, he completed a joint Ph.D. in forest ecology and forest science from AgroParisTech in France and the Technische Universität Dresden in Germany.

Over a twenty-year career, Emil’s research has focused on the use of multispectral, hyperspectral, light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data for applications related to the monitoring of forests, coastal, and terrestrial ecosystems more broadly. Emil is an early adopter for NASA’s NISAR and PACE Earth observation satellite missions. He has also served as a Google Developer Expert for the Earth Engine platform. His work focuses on expanding the integration of satellite remote sensing into UNDERC’s extensive body of research related to forest ecology.
